2016 Hunting Season

2016 Hunting Season

The 2016 hunting season was hot and dry. We hunted all four seasons this year backing right up to Thanksgiving and never had to chain up our hunting rigs. For those of you that have hunted up there in the past knows it doesn’t take much moisture to need chains on the Suburban. We were very fortunate in our success despite the weather conditions. We finished up the year with a 76% kill rate 58% better than the 2015 Colorado average. Talking with local outfitters their kill percentages were way down some were down to 15% which is below the 2015 average for the entire state. There was only one outfitter I talked to that had kill rates that stayed the same. I have three outfitters that border our ranch, between the three ranches they had 72 clients come for the 2016 hunt and between all their clients they shot less elk than we did and we had 20 clients. This is how fortunate we were on the number of elk we took during the 2016 season. The whole state was hot and dry this year. I am interested to see what the Colorado parks and wildlife come up with on harvest percentages and game numbers after the 2016 season.

I’m optimistic that the 2017 season will be a good one. I truly believe the harvest numbers especially in our area are going to be way down after 2016, which means for more elk and bigger bulls for 2017.
